WAHIAWA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A veteran Honolulu police officer on Thursday gave up his right to a trial and, instead, pleaded no contest to shoplifting various grocery items last December.

Officer James Yee, 48, then requested a deferral during the hearing at Wahiawa District Court. The judge granted the defendant's motion, which means he can keep the fourth-degree theft conviction off his record if he stays out of further trouble.

Investigators say the 20-year, HPD veteran was caught stealing groceries from Times Supermarket in Mililani.

The judge ordered Yee to serve 20 hours of community service.
