AAA: Gas prices drop 20 cents in a week

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Gas prices in Hawaii declined significantly this past week throughout the islands, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.

The statewide average for regular unleaded is $4.34 a gallon, 20 cents less than a week ago.

The average price in Honolulu is $4.21 per gallon, 22 cents less than last week, 17 cents less than a month ago and 76 cents higher than this time last year.

In Hilo, the average gas price is $4.24 a gallon, a quarter less than last week, 26 cents less than last month and 68 cents more than this time last year.

Wailuku's average is $4.78 a gallon, 12 cents less than last week, eight cents less than last month and 86 cents more than on this date last year.

"Sustained losses over the last two weeks in the price of a barrel of crude oil and wholesale gasoline have produced steep declines at the pump and much-needed relief for Hawaii drivers," said AAA Hawaii Regional Manager Diane Peterson. "If reduced prices for oil remain, motorists could see significant relief at the pump by Memorial Day."

AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch is a weekly snapshot of gasoline prices. Price comparisons are offered as a service. Prices are derived from fleet vehicle credit card transactions at more than 100,000 stations around the country. Prices shown are combined averages of last card swipe of previous day.

The average price of a gallon of gasoline as of May 19:
