HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - 178 days and change. That's how much time is left before Hawaii plays host to world leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference.

The Honolulu Police Department says its officers have been training since the start of the year in an effort to make APEC a safe and secure event. Sources say officers have been assigned to various teams, such as the crowd management unit, the rapid deployment force, and the bicycle detail.

HPD has roughly two-thousand officers. Hawaii News Now asked Police Chief Louis Kealoha whether he's concerned that cities in other countries have hosted the APEC conference with a lot more police manpower.

"We're still in the planning phases and so it's difficult to comment on right now," Kealoha said. "But what we're planning for is a successful APEC conference."

Some concerns have been raised about the Hawaii Convention Center serving as a meeting site because of its glass makeup and open areas. HPD says it's responsible for security, not the selection of venues.
