Mayor Carlisle kicks off police week

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - They put their lives on the line each and every day, and this week, those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving are being remembered.

Mayor Peter Carlisle Monday signed a proclamation kicking off police week. It was started back in 1962 by President Kennedy, who wanted to honor all fallen police officers around the nation.

There are about 2,000 Honolulu Police officers currently in uniform.

Its chief says he is proud of the job his rank and file are doing.

"Our police officers are brave and courageous, they go out every day and put their life on the line. They do this and they understand the price that they have to pay."

Since 1903, 42 HPD officers have been killed while serving.
