Maui brush fire burns sugarcane field

PAIA, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Maui Fire Department is investigating a brush fire that happened early Saturday morning in Paia.

Crews say the blaze started in a 10-acre sugarcane field, at the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company around 1:22 a.m. That's on Baldwin Avenue, near Paia Elementary School.

It took firefighters a little over two hours to get the flames under control, with the assistance of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar company.

Fire department officials say the company may be able to save some of the sugarcane affected by the blaze, rather than losing the whole crop. The fire's cause is under investigation.
