Second cop not guilty in overtime probe

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A second police officer, Michael Krekel, has been found not guilty on two counts of tampering with a government record.

A circuit court jury Thursday found a Krekel innocent of charges that he filed a false police report so his supervisor could collect extra overtime pay.

After months of investigation, two Honolulu police sergeants and five officers were charged with multiple criminal offenses for an alleged overtime scam.

Prosecutors say the probe involving members of HPD's DUI enforcement team has led to more than 200 drunken driving cases being tossed out of court.

Officer Leighton Kato was also found not guilty during his trial May 5.
