KALIHI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 27-year-old man is in Honolulu police custody accused of murdering his own mother.

A relative, who was checking in on the victim, discovered her body inside her bedroom Wednesday morning.

Officers located the victim's son at Kalakaua District Park, which is a short distance away from the crime scene. He kept his head lowered as he was handcuffed and placed in a patrol car.

Paramedics were among the first responders at a home on Eluwene Street near Kalihi Kai Elementary. Sadly, they wouldn't be needed.

Neighbors quickly learned that Teresita Hernane, 56, had been killed.

"Awww, I feel so sorry about her, you know, so really nice lady, yeah, nice," Mu Afe, next door neighbor, said.

Charlie Hernane, 27, identified by neighbors as the victim's adopted son, was found wearing what appeared to be a blood-splattered shirt behind the gymnasium at nearby Kalakaua District Park. Officers arrested him on suspicion of second-degree murder.

"He's an anti-social kind of guy," Nikki Afe, next door neighbor, said. "All he do is just, you know, like sit down on the stairs and smoke a cigarette, and then go back in the room and stay there."

The victim's niece discovered the body in a bedroom at about 10 AM. Police say she had injuries to her head, and a kitchen knife was found next to her.

"We're going to wait for the medical examiner to take a look," Capt. Britt Nishijo, Honolulu Police Department, said. "But from what we can see, it looks like a laceration."

"A single laceration?" this reporter asked.

"One single laceration," Nishijo replied.

Neighbors say Teresita Hernane had been undergoing dialysis treatments, and was often seen cleaning up the carport or sweeping the driveway.

"I never really thought he would do that to his own mom 'cause the mom, she's a really good lady," Nikki Afe said. "She spoiled him and everything."

Police say the suspect has no prior arrests.

"I don't know what's going on with the son," Mu Afe said. "He did something to her. I don't know why he did that to the mom."

This is the ninth homicide on Oahu so far this year, compared to 12 at the same time last year.
