Fire destroys Maui home, three occupants safe

MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A fire destroyed a home at 1342 B Kahoma St. In Lahaina Wednesday and left three people homeless.

According to Maui fire officials, the first call came in at about 6:21 a.m. for a cottage on fire behind another home.

When firefighters arrived, the cottage was fully engulfed. The blaze was under control by 6:48 a.m. but not completely extinguished until 9:37 a.m.

The damage estimate is $124,000, including $100,000 to structure and $24,000 to its contents.

Three men who lived in the single-story cottage woke when they smelled smoke and escaped safely.

They are being helped by the Red Cross.

The main house was also burned and had about $11,000 in damage.
