HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Kalihi woman accused of stabbing her elderly mother, reportedly as part of a suicide pact, has been declared mentally fit to stand trial.
Circuit Judge Richard Perkins made the ruling Monday, after receiving reports from three court-appointed doctors who examined Janet Wakimura, 49. The doctors determined that the defendant understands the criminal proceedings against her and is capable of assisting her attorney.
Investigators say Wakimura stabbed her 79-year-old mother, Yoshi, in the neck last September, but could not go through with killing herself and called police. Her mother survived the knife attack, but has since died from an unrelated illness.
Wakimura is charged with attempted murder. Her trial is set for July.
