HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The first award in this year's Merrie Monarch Festival has been given out. Tori Hulali Canha of Halau Ke'alaokamaile was named Miss Aloha Hula 2011.
"I know I would bring pride to my family. That was always my goal to my halau," Canha said. "Whether or not I placed or not, I know that they would be proud and that was always my goal. So I would never think I would be standing here (as Miss Aloha Hula 2011) right now."
Love was in the air as viewers witnessed a surprise proposal. After Mahealani Mika Hirao-Solem, Miss Aloha Hula 2010, performed her final dance, her kumu hula, Kaui Kamanao, got down on one knee. "I was nervous the whole year basically," he laughed.
Another proposal never made it on camera. Co-host Kimo Kahoano says Puanani Ashley Reis-Moniz, a Miss Aloha Hula contestant, also got engaged last night.
