Man shot by police in Waimalu identified

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The man shot and killed after waving a gun at police at the Waimalu Shopping Center Tuesday afternoon has been identified as Herbden Gabriel, 46, of Pearl City.

The shooting happened shortly before 3:30 p.m.

People who were at the shopping center when the commotion began told Hawaii News Now the man had stolen, or tried to steal, something from the Pukana La Massage studio on the second floor of the shopping center.

They said the man pulled a gun on a woman in the studio then fled on foot with the woman in pursuit.

A police officer nearby heard her cries for help and gave chase. That is when the shooting occurred.
