22nd Annual Foodbank Food Drive Tomorrow

Posted: Updated:

Honolulu - (HawaiiNewsNow) The Hawaii Foodbank 22nd Annual Food Drive Day is Saturday, April 16 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ramsay Wharton headed down to tomorrow's Foodbank central at Restaurant Row to tell us more.

The Hawaii Foodbank staff and over 2,000 volunteers will be at nine community collection sites across the island. Food Drive Day is the culmination of our Annual Food Drive campaign and our last "big push" to collect food and dollars to meet our goal of raising One Million Meals.

We're asking the community to support our 22nd Annual Food Drive by:

Donating canned goods

We need canned meats, meals (spaghettis, chilis), soups, fruits and vegetables.

Twice over the past six months, we've been extremely low on canned goods. Canned foods are a staple for many of the agencies we serve. They need nonperishable foods to fill the food bags they distribute to people and families in need across the island.

Making a monetary donation
Every $10 you donate helps the Hawaii Foodbank distribute food for 25 meals.

Your monetary donations also help us distribute over 11 million pounds of food annually, over 2 million pounds of fresh produce through our Ohana Produce Plus Program and purchase containers of rice, fresh produce, assorted meats, cereals and canned goods.

Volunteering on Food Drive Day
We need 1,000 more volunteers to help us collect dollars and food on Saturday, April 16. You may download an application at www.hawaiifoodbank.org to volunteer at a collection site in your community.

Your donations are now helping to feed over 14 percent of Hawaii's population or 183,500 different people statewide each year. That means one in seven people need emergency food assistance from the Hawaii Foodbank. The people you help feed are:

  • 55,050 children from low-income or homeless families
  • 11,010 elderly living on fixed incomes
  • The homeless
  • The disabled, including veterans
  • Low-income families with an average monthly income of $850
  • The unemployed
