Nearly 300 Marines and sailors to depart for Afghanistan Wednesday

KANEOHE (HawaiiNewsNow) - Nearly 300 marines and sailors from Marine Corps Base Hawaii will depart for Garmsir, Afghanistan Wednesday in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The marines and sailors are part of 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, also known as the Lava Dogs, and will participate in the continuing stabilization, security and counter-terror efforts while training and mentoring Afghan national security forces.

Their deployment will last seven months.

The Lava Dogs will deploy nearly 1,000 marines and sailors during April.
