HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -- A man who was sexually assaulted by an adult corrections officer while incarcerated at the Oahu Community Correctional Center two years ago has filed a lawsuit against the guard and the state of Hawaii.
A Circuit Court judge last week sentenced Ryan Malasig to 18 months in jail, after he pleaded no contest to second-degree sexual assault. Prosecutors say a 33-year-old male inmate, who was living as a woman, was on kitchen duty at OCCC, when Malasig entered the module and had the prisoner perform oral sex on him.
"It was horrible for me," the victim said in a letter that was read during Thursday's sentencing. "I couldn't sleep or eat. All the uniformed guards looked just like you. I saw you in all of their faces. I couldn't trust authority anymore."
The lawsuit alleges that the state negligently hired, trained and supervised Malasig and, as a result, the plaintiff suffered severe emotional distress. The suit seeks unspecified general and punitive damages.
