New High-Tech Goggles Teach Teens and Parents
About Dangers of Driving Under the Influence

Honolulu - (HawaiiNewsNow) More than 30 selected high school students and their parents from across Hawaii will have chance to feel what it's like to drink and drive – without touching a drop of alcohol.  Ramsay Wharton headed to Aloha Stadium to check out a new project that uses state-of-the-art impairment goggles to teach students and parents about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

It's part of the inaugural Tesoro Hawaii and DTRIC Insurance Driving Challenge at the Aloha Stadium on Saturday, April 16, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is being sponsored in collaboration with the Hawaii Department of Education and the Hawaii Association for Safety and Traffic Educators.

"Tesoro Hawaii has been a supporter of the Department of Education's drivers education program for more than two decades and, this year in partnership with DTRIC Insurance Company, we're glad to introduce new tools and technology to the Islands for the students, said Eric Lee, Tesoro Hawaii's senior regional manager – retail. "The impaired driving challenge takes safe driving lessons to an exciting, new level for the students."

"Helping teens understand the importance of safe driving helps reduce accidents and keeps roads safer for both drivers and pedestrians," said Linh DePledge, DTRIC Insurance's vice president – marketing and sales. "Investing in valuable educational experiences like these benefits everyone."

The goggles can be adjusted to varying degrees of distortion to show the dangers of even the slightest impairment, according to Jan Meeker, who oversees the DOE's drivers education program. In addition to providing valuable lessons for teens, the Tesoro Hawaii and DTRIC Insurance Driving Challenge gives parents the opportunity to use the goggles to simulate nighttime impairment or the effects on vision as a person ages. Local DOE driver education instructor Dr. Sam Lee of Mililani High School developed the curriculum for the Tesoro Hawaii and DTRIC Driving Challenge.

Other Challenge Components
In addition to impaired driving, other components of the Tesoro Hawaii and DTRIC Insurance Driving Challenge include a written test, road test, and parallel parking test, and the ability to maneuver through a skinny chute. All participants will also experience a simulated environment involving multiple distractions while driving.  Having the radio blaring loudly, texting or using the cell phone, having noisy passengers in the back seat will all vividly demonstrate how such distractions can be dangerous and leave a lasting impression on the teen and adult drivers, Meeker said.

DTRIC Insurance will award the winners of the Tesoro Hawaii and DTRIC Insurance Driving Challenge with prizes to students, parents and driver education instructors for the first, second and third overall best teams as well as those who are the best in the written test, road test, parallel parking and skinny chute.

Tesoro Hawaii Operation Driver Excellence
The Tesoro Hawaii Operation Driver Excellence will be held on the same day. More than 20 years ago, Tesoro Hawaii and its predecessor companies launched the "Tesoro Hawaii Operation Driver Excellence," an annual driving competition attracting the best high school student drivers from Oahu and the neighbor islands selected by their driver education instructors. The event is open to students who have completed driver education at a public high school, received their full or provisional driver's licenses and do not have any traffic citations.

The Tesoro Hawaii Operation Driver Excellence competition has three components: a written exam, a road test and six obstacle courses, which will be held on Friday, April 15. The event culminates with a lunch and awards ceremony, with Tesoro Hawaii presenting fuel cards and cash for the student winners, school teams and instructors for this event on Saturday, April 16. DTRIC Insurance will also present the awards for the Tesoro Hawaii and DTRIC Insurance Driving Challenge at that luncheon.
