HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - After months of speculation, former congressman Ed Case is officially entering the U.S. Senate race in 2012.
He made the announcement via his website Sunday.
Case says a recent exploratory trip to Washington, D.C. helped solidify his decision to run.
He's the first major Democratic candidate to announce his bid for the seat being vacated by Senator Daniel Akaka.
Case says party leaders consider him to be a viable candidate.
"We're just getting started, but we've had significant support from both Hawaii and the mainland, really for my past races, and that's gonna happen this time around as well. They understand the importance of the Hawaii State Senator", said Case.
On the other side of the ticket, former Republican Governor Linda Lingle may be eyeing the seat as well.
