Decline in traffic from Japan gets worse

By Howard Dicus

HONOLULU and TOKYO (HawaiiNewsNow) - Fewer than 2,000 flew to Hawaii on flights Thursday on flights from Japan, as the post-tsunami decline in Japanese travel grows deeper.

This week's arrivals by air on flights from Japan:

  • Monday: 2,108
  • Tuesday: 1,887
  • Wednesday: 2,221
  • Thursday: 1,985

Since April began, arrivals from Japan are down 28.8 percent, according to the state's daily tally of arrivals by air.

March arrivals, totaling 102,048, were down 9.5% from the same month in 2010. The earthquake and tsunami struck March 11.

It's thought that a large share of remaining passengers on flights from Japan are transfer passengers who start their trips in other parts of Asia and change planes at Tokyo Narita.

Japan Airlines said Thursday it was asking its employees to take voluntary unpaid.
