WAIKELE (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 27-year-old Waipahu man died in a crash on the H-1 Freeway early Thursday morning.

It happened around 4:30 a.m. just past the Waikele exit.

According to police, the Lance Bernard was traveling Ewa bound in a Mercedes Benz, but was driving in the shoulder lane.

Bernard then slammed into the back of a broken down commercial truck that had been left there overnight.

Cones marked the vehicle, but it appears Bernard did not see it until it was too late.

Police are investigating whether speed and alcohol were factors in crash.

"As for the car bursting into flames that's something that we're going to have to investigate to see exactly what caused it," HPD Traffic Division's Maj. Thomas Nitta said.

A worker from the company that owns that flat bed truck said the tow company that came out Wednesday night told them they couldn't move the truck until Thursday.

This is Honolulu's 16th traffic fatality this year.
