7.4 magnitude earthquake hits off Japan's coast

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan early Thursday morning. It was reported at roughly 4:39 a.m. Hawaii time near the east coast of Honshu.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii or the west coast of the United States.

A tsunami alert was issued for the northeastern coast of Japan, but was later lifted.

Thursday's aftershock is the most powerful since last month's 9.0 earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami.

Officials at the crippled nuclear plant in Fukushima say there are no immediate signs of new problems caused by the earthquake.
