HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 27-year-old man from Pearl City was killed early Thursday morning in an auto accident on the H-1 Freeway heading west-bound near the Waikele off-ramp.
The three right-hand lanes were closed for most of the morning while police investigated the crash and cleared the scene. All lanes are now open, but traffic remains slowgoing through the area.
Police say at around 4:20 a.m., the man was driving in the shoulder lane when he slammed into the back of a parked flatbed commercial truck. One of the vehicles caught fire. Smoke could be seen moments after the crash.
"Right now, we don't know what the problem is," said Maj. Thomas Nitta from the Honolulu Police Department. "Our investigation will have to show that, but we do know he was driving in the shoulder lane."
The company that owns the truck says it broke down at around 7 p.m. Wednesday and was left in the shoulder lane. The area was coned off and the truck was scheduled to be towed in the morning.
Police are still determining whether speed and alcohol were involved in the crash.
