WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man who stole beer from an ABC Store in Waikiki was killed when he was run over by a tour bus.
According to Honolulu Police, the man had stolen two 12-packs of beer from the ABC Store at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki on Kalakaua Ave. shortly after 10:30 p.m. He had just dropped the beer and was continuing to flee on Koa St. when he tripped and fell beneath a Travel Plaza Transportation bus which had just turned from Kaiulani Ave. Investigators say the man was run over by the bus' rear tire and was dragged for about 100 feet before the bus came to a stop. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said it was unknown whether the victim had alcohol or drugs in him when he was run over. Alcohol, drugs and speed were not factors with the 47 year-old bus driver, who was not injured.
The death is the 14th traffic fatality this year on Oahu. There were 17 traffic deaths at this time last year.
