U.S. Census Bureau releases business figures for Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Almost one-third of all businesses owned by Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. are based in Hawaii.

That comes from newly-released statistics by the U.S. Census Bureau.

It also found the number of firms owned by Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders grew 31 percent over five years, which is much higher than the national growth rate of 18 percent.

Eighty-nine percent of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander businesses had no paid employees, meaning they were owned by sole proprietors, independent agents or commission workers who did not have a payroll.
