High surf advisory for north and west facing shores

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The National Weather Service Tuesday issued a high surf advisory for north and west facing shores of Kauai, Niihau and Oahu from noon Wednesday through 6 a.m. Friday.

A storm heading for the Gulf of Alaska will send a large northwest swell across Hawaiian waters beginning Wednesday.

* Surf. For north facing shores surf will peak at 18 to 24 feet. For west facing shores, surf will peak at 12 to 18 feet.

* Timing. The surf will reach advisory levels around noon Wednesday on Kauai and Niihau and late Wednesday afternoon on Oahu. Surf will peak Wednesday night and early Thursday then gradually subside.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area producing rip currents and localized beach erosion.
