Police search for suspect in overnight shooting on Nimitz Hwy.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A homeless camp near the Nimitz Paint Ball Center is on lockdown Thursday morning as police investigate an overnight shooting.

Officers responded to the call just after 3 a.m. near Sand Island Access Rd. and Nimitz Hwy.

The victim, a 43-year-old man, was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his left hand.

Joseph Lupica helped the victim shortly after the shooting. "I was at home watching a movie and I heard a gunshot and about 25, 30 seconds I heard someone screaming for help," he said. "So I grabbed my phone and went outside."

"I wrapped his shirt around him and helped him out here to the front and called the ambulance for him."

"He was in a lot of pain. 'It was burning,' he said. He was worried about somebody coming, the guy coming and... when I got him up here in the front that he was going to get shot again, but the guy never showed up."

Police have identified a suspect but have not yet located him.
