Kyo-ya/Starwood issues statement on union vote

HONOLULU – Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Friday issued this statement following the announcement that members of UNITE HERE! Local 5 ratified agreements for approximately 2,800 associates at six Hawaii hotels.
"Our associates' approval of a new contract allows Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts to continue sharing our special spirit of aloha with our guests while also allowing our associates to better provide for their families," said Ernest Nishizaki, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts. "Now we can refocus our collective efforts toward maintaining and enhancing our guests' confidence and our tradition of hospitality, sharing and caring for both our guests and our associates. We must all pull together and continue working collaboratively, especially in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan."
"We are pleased to have the approval of our associates," said Keith Vieira, senior vice president of operations in Hawaii and French Polynesia for Starwood Hotels & Resorts, which manages the five Kyo-ya hotels in Hawaii and owns and manages the Sheraton Kauai Resort. "We can now move forward in providing our guests with a world-class experience and help keep Hawaii open for business in this period of fragile economic recovery."
