HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Many Hawaii residents haven't slept a wink because they have been frantically trying to reach family in Japan. Phone service has been spotty.
Most information has been coming in through Facebook and Twitter.
The Consul General of Japan in Honolulu, Yoshi Kamo, received a call from his two daughters in Tokyo that they're okay, but others are still waiting for word. He told us, "Working all night through to help assist Japanese nationals and other concerned people know more about what's happening in Japan. It was just like a Hollywood movie -- that big enormous tsunami just engulfing all the houses and cars, electric poles, everything."
The Japanese Consulate has set up a website to help connect family members.
That's at http://www.honolulu.us.emb-japan.go.jp/en/tsunamia.htm. You can input a family member or friend's phone number, and see if there's any word on that person's whereabouts-- or post information about someone.
