Man robs Kauai Thrifty Mart but leaves empty-handed

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police are searching for a man who tried to rob the Thrifty Mart in Kaumakani Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, a man entered the store wearing dark clothing and sun glasses. After walking around the store and selecting an item the man approached the counter. He then pointed a handgun at the cashier and demanded money.

The cashier backed off and the male subject fled in an unknown direction. It is not known if the suspect fled on foot or in a vehicle.

The store's cashier called police at 1:19 p.m. Wednesday.

The suspect is described as about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing between 180 and 200 pounds. He is believed to be in his early- to mid-twenties and has a tan complexion.

No items or money were reported missing.

Anyone with information about the robbery is urged to call detective James Kurasaki at 241-1901, Police Dispatch, 241-1711, or Crime Stoppers, 241-1887.

Kauai police suggest the following tips to prevent crime:

· Make daily cash deposits and keep a minimum amount of cash on-hand.

· Install interior and/or video surveillance systems.

· Install security lighting and motion sensors.

· Hire security guards to help deter crime.

· Be aware of anyone who might be "casing" your business for a future break-in.

· Form alliances with neighbors to keep an eye out for each other such as the Neighborhood Watch Program.

· Report any suspicious activity to the Kauai Police Department at 241-1711 or Crime Stoppers at 241-1887.
