HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - In the first settlement with any of the hotel chains operating in Waikiki, Local 5 of the UNITE-HERE union has reached agreement with Hilton Hotels on a new contract that will go to ratification vote Tuesday.
Sources close to the negotiations say the formal announcement will be made at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the Hilton Hawaiian Village campus. The sources say the agreement includes wage increases and protects benefits that workers were eager to secure.
Local 5 is still in negotiations with Starwood, Hyatt and Marriott, and the next contract talks, with Starwood, had also been scheduled to take place Tuesday.
The settlement between Local 5 and Hilton came as a tentative agreement was also announced between Hilton and Local 2 in San Francisco, and followed ratification of a new four-year contract between Local 1 and the Hilton hotels in Chicago.
In both of those cities, wage increases were described as working out to $2 an hour over the four-year life of the contract, but benefit terms differed from city to city, and the sources in Honolulu stressed that the Waikiki agreement was also done separately.
