Hawaii based soldier killed in Afghanistan

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Department of Defense announced today the death of an 8th Theater Sustainment Command Soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Staff Sgt. Mark C. Wells, 31, an explosive ordnance disposal technician, assigned to the 74th Ordnance Company died March 5, in HelmandProvince, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

While in Afghanistan, the 74th Ordnance Company is assigned to the Combined Joint Task Force Paladin. When not deployed, the company is assigned to the 303rd Ordnance Battalion, 45th Sustainment Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Wells is a native of San Jose, Calif., and is survived by his wife and son.

He enlisted in the Army in December 2003 and has been assigned to the 303rd EOD Battalion since July 2008. He deployed to Afghanistan in August 2010 and to Iraq from December 2003 to February 2005.
