MOILIILI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The negotiations between the two parties took a turn with a federal mediator added to the heated talks.
Hawaiian Electric Company President Richard Rosenblum arrived at the meeting with hopes of ending the strike by nearly 1,300 union members in three counties.
The walkout coincided with a massive outage caused by severe weather affecting thousands of Oahu residents.
Rosenblum wouldn't discuss any of the sticking points in the contract talks, but he believes the mediator will help the two sides reach an agreement.
"Our goal is to include an unbiased third party. Sometimes that can take a lot of the emotions out of the issues and find us a path of bringing us together that perhaps we couldn't find on our own", said Richard Rosenblum.
So far, non-union workers have been tasked with repairing damaged power lines and helping to restore power to the many residents left in the dark.
