HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - From the streets to the shelter, to transitional housing. Tonight, we're going to share an important story on Homelessness in Hawaii.
Advocates for the homeless estimate there's a shortage of 40,000 "affordable homes" in Hawaii. And for the homeless, moving from the streets -- to the shelter -- to transitional housing is *key to getting their lives -- back to normal.
There are 68 rooms here at Hale Ulu Pono and all of them have a common kitchen where they can cook and utilize the refrigerator. And then there's a common sitting area, where people can gather and talk story. All of the residents are asked to put a little something down when they move in. And their rent is based on 30 percent of their income.
