HONOLULU (KFVE) -- It's no secret – Kalihi is loaded with great places to eat. Some of them are hard to find. But this week's Cheap Eats is well worth the search. Russ and Lyle head to Kahai Street Kitchen on Kahai Street in Kalihi.
"Kind of a hole in the wall, almost at the end of the road," said Joel Hendrix of Temple Valley. "But a great place to eat. Don't tell anybody."
Unfortunately, the secret is out. The Kahai Street Kitchen is home to some of the best and most unique cheap eats on Oahu, like their Maui potato chip-crusted mahimahi. There's also their deep fried, Macadamia nut-crusted soft shell crab.
Located a few blocks makai of Nimitz Highway, the Kahai Street Kitchen is a mix of taste and value that keeps customers coming back for more.
"This is the roast beef osso bucco," said Hendrix. "And I have some shrimp with it. Excellent meal."
Down at Kahai Street Kitchen, you'll get stuff you can get nowhere else, like the babu arare-crusted opakapaka or the braised boneless shortrib osso bucco with kataifi-wrapped shrimp and wasabi aioli. You're not going to find that anywhere else but here at Kahai Street Kitchen.
If you're looking for something more hearty, there's also the black forest steak with mushrooms, peppers and melted provolone cheese. Or check out the crab and artichoke-crusted mahimahi with lemon butter sauce and capers. That's all at Kahai Street Kitchen… this week's Cheap Eats.
