On Sunrise: Waikiki Hotel Strike Authorization Vote Begins

We're tracking a pair of big developing stories this morning.

STARWOOD HOTEL STRIKE IN THE WORKS?

Around 6 this morning, the voting will start for hotel workers at 4 Starwood properties in Waikiki. Close to 17 hundred employees of the Sheraton Waikiki, Moana Surfrider, Royal Hawaiian and Princess Kaiulani will take a strike authorization vote. They've been working without a contract since June. The results are expected tonight around 6:30.

IMPACT OF POTENTIAL HOTEL STRIKE ON HAWAII

Howard Dicus will talk about the negotiations, history and possible impact on Hawaii tourism. Plus, look at a strike that did stop operations at another Waikiki hotel for 5 days, and the ongoing dispute with Hyatt workers that resulted in a demonstration in Waikiki and hundreds of arrests.

This Friday is the deadline for Congress to reach a budget funding deal that would head off a government shutdown, or at least buy time for 2 more weeks. The House approved it yesterday. Today, it's the Senate's turn. Our political pundits will weigh in on the budget battle between Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill.
