MANOA, Honolulu (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Rainbow Baseball team (1-0) had trouble doing anything right in the first 7 innings against 9th ranked Oregon…that is…until the bottom of the 8th rolled around.
The Bows entered the bottom of the inning trailing the Ducks 3-1. Hawaii's Jeff Van Doornum singled up the middle of the infield to score Kolten Wong from 2nd base, closing the deficit to 3-2. Two batters later, Collin Bennett drove a single down the first base line, which barely managed to remain in fair play, scoring Van Doornum and tying the game 3-3.
Under the pressure of the one- thousand plus fans chanting for Hawaii, Oregon catcher Jack Marder couldn't get a handle on a Scott McGough offering, allowing it to roll towards the UH dugout. Hawaii's Michael Blake darted for home to narrowly beat Marder's throw to McGough who covered home, and the Bows gained their first lead of the night 4-3.
From there, UH closer Lenny Linsky retired the next three Oregon batters, striking out Mitch Karraker to end the game.
Hawaii (1-0) will host Oregon Saturday at 6:35pm H.S.T.
