Hapuna Beach closed for possible unexploded ordnance

HAPUNA (HawaiiNewsNow) Hapuna State Recreation Area in Kona temporarily closed Tuesday until further notice, pending an investigation by the Department of Land and Natural Resources of possible unexploded ordnance.

A cylindrical object was spotted in waters four to five feet deep at the south end of Hapuna Beach by a Hawaii county lifeguard. It is described as being four to six inches in diameter and about eight inches of it is showing above the sand.

The object has not yet been confirmed as unexploded ordnance. Yellow "CAUTION" tape has been put up for the investigation. The park will be closed Tuesday night.

The US Army's Unexploded Ordnance office on Oahu has been notified. The public should stay away from the beach and nearby waters.
