Kids receive awards for winning essays

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Some Honolulu Police officers handed out awards instead of tickets.  It's all part of PAL, which stands for Police Activities League.  PAL uses athletic programs to keep children out of trouble.  Sunday afternoon, some students received prizes in a creative writing contest.  The competition was established five years ago.  "Just to reflect on why they're here and to acknowledge and appreciate who helps them get to where they're at, their coaches, their parents, the PAL advisers", said HPD coordinator Frank Everett.  The students also had a chance to read their winning essays.  HPD has been a part of the PAL program for more than 62 years.
