The price of public school lunch going up

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The cost of a public school lunch is going up effective March 1, according to the state Department of Education.

Act 26, passed by the 2009 Legislature and signed into law by the then-governor Linda Lingle, requires the DOE ensure that the meal price charged is not less than one-half of the cost of preparing the meals.

Therefore, effective March 1, school meal prices will be:

Breakfast (school meal price increase)
Regular student breakfast        $1.00 (+5 cents)
Reduced price student breakfast        $.30 (no change)
Second and subsequent student breakfasts        $2.00 (+10 cents)
        Adult breakfast        $2.00 (+10 cents)

Lunch (school meal price increase)
Regular student lunch        $2.35  (+15 cents)
Reduced price student lunch        $.40  (no change)
Second student entree        $1.85  (+10 cents)
Second student lunch        $4.70  (+30 cents)
        Adult lunch        $4.70  (+30 cents)

If a student purchases a regular breakfast and a regular lunch every school day, he/she will be paying $1 more per week for meals than previously paid.

School meal prices were last raised on January 1, 2010.
