Domestic argument may have led to dramatic car crash

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two people are in the hospital after an apparent domestic argument that led to a woman taking off in her car, with her ex-boyfriend hanging on to the vehicle's hood.

Honolulu Police said the incident began in the parking lot of the Times Supermarket on Beretania. "Apparently, the male got on the hood of the vehicle somehow," said Maj. Richard Robinson of HPD's Criminal Investigation Division. "The vehicle then was on the roadway, and then the vehicle crashed into a building at the intersection of Ward and Beretania Street."

The car jumped the curb before smashing into the side of the First Insurance Building. Jeffrey Smith witnessed the aftermath. "The police and ambulance workers was removing the lady, brought her out here on a stretcher and a neck brace," Smith said. "The man wasn't visible. He was between the building and the vehicle.

Robinson said the 46 year-old man was taken to Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. The 44 year-old woman was reported in serious condition. Robinson also said the woman had filed a temporary restraining order against the man on Monday, but officers were unable to find the man to serve the order.

Police opened an attempted murder investigation against the driver, but Robinson said it was likely that it would be reclassified, probably to a lesser charge, as the investigation continues.
