HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Safeway is getting ready to build a brand new store on Oahu.

A blessing and groundbreaking ceremony was held today on Beretania Street at the site of the former Schuman Carriage auto dealership.

It will neighbor another Safeway on Beretania which was the first Safeway to open in the islands almost 50 years ago.

The company says the new store will be larger and more modernized and offer a wider array of products.

"It's very similar to the Kapahulu store if people have seen that," said Susan Houghton, Safeway director of public affairs. "It's basically a nice format of offering organics, ingredients for life, full service meat and deli, seafood areas and really a store that we want to people to come and feel comfortable in."

"We're going to have a lot of new offerings including more local items, increased organics and just a great store, a new facility for the community," said George Cluckfeld, general manager, Safeway Hawaii.

Safeway hopes to open the new store in February, 2012.
