Spectacular lightning show over Windward Oahu

KAILUA (HawaiiNewsNow) - By early Thursday afternoon patches of blue sky appeared over Windward Oahu. People were at the beach swimming, surfing, and sunning themselves. The sunshine was a welcome sight after an overnight storm dumped rain on Windward residents. Some low lying areas prone to flooding were swamped.

"The winds and the rain was constantly steady. It didn't let up, it just kept going. It wasn't a downpour for like an hour and that's it. It was just the whole night," said Michael Freitas of Kahaluu.

The storm that hit Oahu Wednesday night and early Thursday morning lit up the sky with a spectacular lightening show.

"I would say last night was one of a kind. Very rare. You'll see it over the Koolaus and you'll see it over here, but something like that last night I'd have to say looked like something you'd see over a big pasture in cow country (on the mainland)," said John Fitzgerald, who says he has lived in Kailua for 40 years.
