Big Island man dies after one-car crash

BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - An unidentified man was killed in a one-vehicle crash at about 11:34 p.m. Wednesday on Lua Kula Street in Waikoloa Village in the South Kohala District.

The man was driving a 2006 Toyota pickup truck and traveling north on Lua Kula Street when he ran off the right side of the road, struck a light post and struck a tree, according to police.

The victim was pinned in the truck and had to be extricated by Fire Department personnel. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Police believe that speed and alcohol were factors in this crash.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner's inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information about this crash to call Officer Joshua Lewis at 326-4646, extension 229.
