HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A state task force has finalized its suggestion for curbing illegal fireworks.  Today, the panel of lawmakers and representatives from federal, state and county agencies signed off on the recommendations it'll forward to the legislature.  They include raising fines and fees on people busted for selling and possessing illegal fireworks and increasing random inspections of cargo containers.

Fireworks industry representatives voted against the recommendations which were supported by law enforcement.

Maj. Michael Moses of the Honolulu Police Department said, "I think it was good to bring all of the stake holders together, in particular people from the shipping industry.  We had folks from the fireworks industry and they have all of their opinions.  It was good to get everybody in the same room and brainstorm how we can attack this very complex problem.

Jerald Farley, a fireworks industry representative, shared his perspective, saying, "Fireworks are not going to go away.  It's going to become a major problem.  And the legal fireworks industry won't be a part of that solution because we won't be here on this island".

There were 6 public meetings that led to these recommendations - all held before Oahu enacted its new ban on novelty fireworks.
