HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Room rates soared but do did occupancy rates as visitors from Asia and the U.S. mainland filled Hawaii hotels for New Year's Eve.

In the final week of 2010, when Smith Travel Research LLC reported U.S. hotels only 47% full, Hospitality Advisors LLC reported hotels two-thirds to nine-tenths full across the islands.

The breakdown by county:

  • Oahu 84%, up from 76% the week before, with an average room rate of $229.
  • Maui 82%, also up from 76% the week before, with an average room rate of $417.
  • Big Island 72%, up from 59% the week before, with an average room rate of $277.
  • Kauai 67%, up from 53% the week before, with an average room rate of $294.

Comparing room rates to the last week of 2009, the Big Island rate was down 7%, but Oahu was up 7%, Maui up 9%, and Kauai up 17%.
