HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - People who heard a series of gunshots near the Hawaii Convention Center today need not be alarmed.

The shots were part of a sniper detection demonstration.

Three gunman, armed with blanks and posing as snipers, fired toward the convention center.

A new device developed by locally based Oceanit uses infrared technology to instantly determine where the shots came from and what kind of weapon was fired.

The military will be testing the device for possible use in combat situations.

Oceanit's "flash" technology can be mounted on moving vehicles and helicopters.

Someday it may even be used to help protect the president.
