Services held for Herbert Horita

Herbert Horita Herbert Horita

AIEA (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hundreds of friends and family attended a memorial service for Hawaii developer Herbert Horita Tuesday. People from all walks of life, including contractors, architects, bankers, politicians, and friends and family gathered at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Newtown to remember Horita.

"What surprises me is in the receiving line there were a few people that came right up to me and I asked, 'Oh, how do you know dad?' And they were like ‘he sold us our first home.'" Horita's son Keith told Hawaii News Now.

During a career that spanned more than 50 years Horita developed more than 13,500 single family homes and condominiums, 500 hotel units, 240 acres of industrial land, and 336,000 square feet of commercial space.

He created several master-planned communities including Newtown Estates, Royal Kunia, Village Park, and the Ko Olina Resort. He also built homes in Nuuanu, Kaneohe, Moanalua Gardens, Waialae Iki, and Hawaii Kai and built golf courses in Ewa.

Horita died December 20th at the age of 80.
