HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii arrivals by air came in around 680,000 in December, up 7.2% from the same month a year earlier, state figures show.

The arrivals volume was the fourth highest of 2010, bested only by June, July and August, and raised the possibility that the visitor count could hit 7 million for the year.

Daily arrivals include returning locals, which can account for an average 13% of all arrivals. The tallies are logged by the state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism.

Arrivals from Japan were 4% better than year-before levels in December, while mainland traffic was up 25% to Kauai, 29% to Maui, and 43% to the Big Island.
