WAIMEA, Hawaii Island (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Big Island of Hawaii is home to the state's first baby of the New Year.

Layne and Kahi Richards welcomed a baby girl just one minute after midnight Saturday at North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea. The girl weighed eight pounds, four ounces, and is 19 inches long. She is the second baby for the Richards family. Mother and baby are doing well, but there's no name yet for the newborn girl.

Oahu's first baby entered the world about 25 minutes later at Tripler Army Medical Center, another baby girl named Tehani Chiemi. The little girl's birthday is just two days before her mom's, who also was born at Tripler.

"She was actually supposed to be on December 24th, so she was late," said Tehani's mother, Noelle Tamashiro. "I'm just happy she's here."

Tehani is six pounds, 13 ounces.
