'American Girl' promotes Hawaii tourism

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - You may have heard of the "American Girl" dolls.

They're a huge hit and this year for the first time, a Hawaii-themed doll is dubbed the "American Girl of the Year."

Her name is "Kanani Akina" and she's described as a multi-ethnic girl from Kauai.

Each Kanani doll is sold with a companion book that tells her story.

One of those stories is about Kanani rescuing an endangered Hawaiian monk seal on the Garden Isle.

The Kauai Visitor's Bureau says her overall message is to share aloha with others, and they're thrilled that her local ties will also bring nationwide attention to Kauai.

The 18-inch doll is available starting Jan. 1 through the company's web site, www.americangirl.com.
