'CATS' opens in Honolulu

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The only "CATS" production in North America comes to Hawaii!

"CATS," the show that revolutionized musical theatre, is in Honolulu! Broadway in Hawaii presents the national touring production of "CATS" at the Neil S. Blaisdell Concert Hall. The only production in North America sanctioned by Andrew Lloyd Webber, "CATS" opens on Tuesday, December 28 and runs for just eight performances, closing Sunday, January 2.

Called "One of the most imaginative and eye-pleasing musicals of the century" by The Los Angeles Times and "playful, eye popping, heart-stopping entertainment on a grand scale" by The Washington Post, "CATS" at the Blaisdell is the "purrfect" way to introduce your family to the wonders of live theater. What began as a musical about cats after Andrew Lloyd Webber picked up a book of poems - T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" – in an airport bookshop has become one of the longest running shows in Broadway's history. Winner of seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, "CATS" features 20 of Andrew Lloyd Webber's timeless melodies, including the hit song, "Memory."

"CATS" follows an immensely successful Broadway in Hawaii presentation of Disney's "Beauty at the Beast" at the Blaisdell – shows that packed the house each and every night. It's no secret that tickets for "CATS" are selling fast and fans should be "on the prowl" for their own tickets soon!

Tickets for all performances are on sale now and range from $70 to $35. Opening night tickets are only $55, $45 and $30. Tickets are sold at Ticketmaster.com, the Blaisdell Concert Hall Box Office, all Wal-Mart outlets, Sports Gear at Windward Mall and by calling 1-800-745-3000.  Kids are 50% off Tuesday, December 28 and Sunday, January 2nd's evening performance.

Produced by CATS-Eye, LLC, the national tour of "CATS" features original direction by Trevor Nunn and choreography by Gillian Lynne. This is the "CATS" credited with the British invasion of Broadway. The national tour of "CATS" is closing in on its 30th anniversary, holding its place as the longest continuously touring Broadway musical in history.

On May 11, 1981, "CATS" opened at the New London Theatre in London's West End. Eight years later it celebrated its first important milestone: After 3,358 performances, it became the longest running musical in the history of British theatre. CATS played its final performance on its 21st birthday, May 11, 2002.

"CATS" opened on Broadway October 7, 1982 at the Winter Garden Theatre and continued to live up to its motto "Now and Forever." On June 19, 1997, "CATS" became the longest running musical on Broadway.  It ended its 18-year run on September 10, 2000 with 7,485 performances. "The Phantom of the Opera" broke that record on January 9, 2006 when "Phantom" celebrated its 7,486th curtain.
