HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Department of Health has extended its Brown Water Advisory for Oahu, advising people to stay out of waters near river mouths and harbors.

Some organizations, such as public high school canoe paddling teams, suspended all meets until the warnings are lifted.  However, private high schools, including Punahou, decided to chance the murky waters to train before a championship meet tomorrow.

ILH canoe paddling coach Marion Lyman-Mersereau admitted, "It does look not so wonderful but I've seen it worse so we're going to have a go."

Department of Health director Keith Ridley explained, "Even if you do have protective clothing, wash off afterwards.  Warm soapy water is the best way of being able to remove the contaminants from your skin."

The paddle crew members are required to thoroughly wash off with a prescribed soap.

Any members who have any open sores or wounds were not allowed to train.
